Pick up #8, pick up 9/21 or 9/23

Are we sure it’s autumn? It’s awfully warm these days. The overnight lows are what we should have in July and August. The weather right now is deceiving, because the squash, cucumbers, and watermelon plants are all dying back even though it’s still warm. I’m guessing they’re tired, and as the days grow shorter, they know fall is coming so they’re checking out.

Also, just as I write this Margaret called to let me know she hit a deer. Thankfully she’s safe and unharmed, but it's a bummer about the car. The deer are very active these days as they prepare for fall. Even though it may feel summery, fall is here and the leaves on the trees will become those stunning fall colors we love so much.

Out of the ground and in our germ chamber to sweeten up and cure.

This week we harvested potatoes as well as our SWEET POTATOES! Interestingly, this last variety of potatoes did twice as well as the other varieties we grew. Our sweet potatoes also did awesome. Despite us losing about 1/3 of them to rodents snacking on them just after they were planted, the surviving plants made enough tubers to overfill our wheelbarrow! Hooray for the survivors!

What’s in the box?

Potatoes! German Butterballs - Store them out of direct sunlight

Celery - flavorful! keep in a bag in the fridge or store in a container with water in the fridge

Green curly kale - keeps best in a bag in the fridge

Onions - 2 yellow, 2 red. They aren’t curing like we’d hope, so use them sooner rather than later

Garlic - keeps best on the counter out of direct sunlight

Parsley - keeps best in a bag in the fridge

Green peppers - keep best in the fridge

Cherry tomatoes - they’re still going and they’re still delicious

Winter Squash - Black Futsu(skin is edible) and Nut Butters(arguably more sweet than butternuts)

Nut Butter, small but mighty

Another reminder: we do have a fair amount of garlic on hand. If you’d like more, 1, 2, 5, or 10 pounds are available. You can find it here. This will help us with a possibly high car bill, amid an overall challenging season. Garlic stores extremely well. Feel free to ask us about that. We also have freezer greens shares available and extra tomatoes. Thank you all for all your support. BTW there’s only one more pick up after this 10/5 and 10/7.

Happy eating!

Andrew, Margaret, Ellie cat, Milton cat, and Aida dog
