When did you move here?
We moved here in 2018 and are only the third owners of this beautiful farm. The previous family rented in 1945, 46 and then purchased the farm at that time.
What has changed since you moved here?
Everything! We have planted hundreds of trees, restored spaces to prairie, restructured gardens, and added mostly native plants. We took 40 acres out of conventional agriculture, increasing water retention, and have rebuilt soil structure through no-till, low till organic methods.
The birds, wildlife, and bumblebees thank us for this effort every day.
We have also added two high tunnels, a greenhouse, two caterpillar tunnels, and a deep winter greenhouse. We refurbished one barn to be a pack shed and another to be a storage facility for tractors, tools, and the like. There is even an old milking room that would be great for classes, a commercial kitchen, or a guest house.
The house and repairs needed:A 126-year-old home needs yearly maintenance at least. The beams supporting the house need reinforcement, the siding and house wrap need replacing, and the home needs insulation. These are projects we couldn’t get to.
We have replaced many windows, and so those should last 10-20 years. Much improvement and renovation were done to the interior of the house, and the rooms in the home are large for an old home.
We can tell you how much it costs to heat the home. We do not have A/C. That has been fine in the summer- we close the windows and shades, and it stays cool.
The plumbing was refurbished but the electrical has not been. It is a good site for solar but the grid in Chisago County is “full” and cannot accommodate a tied-in system. If you wanted to go off-grid, you could!
You can always modify and improve a house, but good land is hard to find.
What kind of farm could I run here?
A diverse farm would fit well. Ten acres of pasture (with an option to rent 20 more), two barns, and a fully fenced vegetable field. No existing electric fencing infrastructure, but NRCS may help.
We will not sell to anyone planning conventional agriculture. We want someone to continue the work we have been doing.
Ideas: Orchard, U-pick, Pizza farm / on-farm events, Bedding plants/greenhouse operation, petting zoo?!, restoration farm?
What are the neighbors like?
They’ve been great to us! We can tell you all about them.
We currently rent to two of them. One is a beekeeper and the other hays the land.
