August is here!
Welcome to Box 3! ( all links to recipes and info are blue)
For August, we celebrate tomato season with 1. 4 pounds of cherry tomatoes. We had a silly mix up with tomatoes this year so there are very few slicing tomatoes. Perhaps the farmers market will provide those for you and you can find a new favorite farmer since this is our last year! You may notice the cherry tomatoes have a white coating or white dots. This is from the watering system in the High Tunnel. It is a good idea to wash or rinse your produce before eating anyway, and cherry tomatoes are no exception!
There are 3 kinds of Basil in this box. One has fuzzy stems, which tells you its name is Holy Basil or Tulsi. This type is great for tea. The second type is Thai basil. This type has a dark purple seed head or flower spike. While also great for tea, it is more often used in Thai dishes. Spring rolls, laarb, and pad thai are all great options for this type of basil.
Additionally, there is traditional basil, which, of course, is used in so many dishes. Then we have parsley, thyme, and sage! Parsley is great on pizzaor as a chimichurri sauce. Thyme and sage dry well for later use or can be used in breads, whole chicken, or as a sauce for fish. Fresh herbs are a delight and can bring your meal to the next level, especially with a simple sauce.
If you eat meat, roasting a whole chicken is a great meal prep step for the week as you can add it to salads and the like. We sometimes make tofu “chicken” where we take tofu and lemon and thyme, rosemary, and sage and let the tofu marinate in that and air fry it. This versatile tofu recipe is also great in bowl meals, salads, and so on. For bowl meals, you can substitute rice with the lettuce in your box.
Andrew said, the broccoli is just a taste! And I said, but if you put it in a risotto, that would be nice! So here’s a little recipe for that…. a note on your broccoli…it may have little frandz in it. To clean your broccoli, you can cut it up and then soak it in warm salty water.
I think that’s all for box 3. If you have any questions, please email us. We’re happy to help you find recipes or ways to preserve your harvest! Remember what to eat first: the green things! Take care and enjoy August!
